One young man, two dogs, 400 acres and a caravan full of chooks. These are the essential ingredients for a new, innovative venture into sustainable farming in Northern Victoria.

Elliot Fehring’s painted ‘wheeled henhouse’ engages the principles of sustainability by travelling in the wake of a  grazing organic dairy herd. Each day the chooks feast on the grubs growing in the cow pats (Thank you flies!), scratching the soil and spreading their own brand of chookly goodness on the pasture as they go. Meanwhile, two chicken- besotted white Marema pups guard the feathery procession from marauding foxes day and night and the ‘paddock eggs produced by the entourage are sold at  local farmers markets.

A quirky flagship for a brave new world of healthy farming, Elliot’s ‘chicken express’  waves a colourful banner for the future of healthy food in this country.
